Learn from the ‘Ask Ed’ newsletter what is new for 2026: design trends, room-specific remodeling trends, and high-value home upgrades for Northern California and the Bay Area.
It’s hard to believe, but after a very enjoyable holiday season filled with family, lights, and lots of love, here it is – 2026 – a brand New Year! We’re listening to our clients and enjoying working with them to put together plans for their next home improvement project or value-preserving home repair. At Ed Neir Construction, whether you’re dreaming of a spa-bathroom, outdoor kitchen, or simply in need of essential home, business, or farm building repairs, we’re here to help!
DESIGN TRENDS FOR 2026
For 2026, our NorCal and Bay Area clients are moving towards home remodels focused on warmth and nature. After a stretch of interior remodels that featured stark grays, a fresh, new trend is the move towards earthy tones like terracotta, olive, and sandy beige; natural textures (i.e. wood and stone), and biophilic design. Biophilic design is all about bringing the outdoors in with natural materials, more plants, green walls, large windows, and organic shapes.
More and more, our clients are curating personalized spaces, smart tech, and sustainable features like fire-resistant siding, with kitchen and bath trends leaning into cozy minimalism, artisan tiles, and spa-like retreats with metal accents.
Personalized and lived-in spaces are the big trend, with many moving away from the starkness of the recent past to a collected, curated look. Bold colors and unique textures are now popular with “color drenching” a new interior design favorite!
We are seeing a new kind of approach to luxury referred to as “Luxe Minimalism” where clean lines are balanced with comfort, layered textures, and soft, sculptural lighting.
Also big on the list of home improvement “musts” are a focus on eco-conscious materials, energy efficiency, and seamless, subtle smart home tech integration.
Expect to see kitchens that are bold, with earthy cabinetry, statement tile backsplashes (not just subway), mixed metals, matte finishes, and natural stone countertops. If you would like to see some of our work and learn more about the design trends for 2026, please accept this free Gourmet Kitchen Remodel Guide. Even if your pocketbook isn’t ready for a high-end/gourmet kitchen remodel, you will find in this free guide special features and inspirational ideas that you can incorporate to make your kitchen remodel the kitchen you’re happy to call the heart of your home!
Bathrooms continue to be favored as places of peace and harmony, with the focus continuing on spa-like retreats that incorporate natural stone, textured tiles, warmer palettes, and intentional lighting for an overall feeling of calm and rejuvenation.
When it comes to your general living spaces, more clients are seeking remodels and additions that focus on architectural details such as wainscoting and molding, with a gradual move to more defined zones – not just open plan living – and multifunctional areas for work and wellness.
As many of us know after years of wildfires and the loss of highly valued neighborhoods and cherished family homes, fire-conscious homes are a primary concern. Things like fire-resistant siding are top of mind, given it has become essential for wildfire protection and insurance. Add to this the growing popularity of durable decking, that features composite or other high-quality materials for expanded living.
Also of significant value is the move to upgraded entryways that feature beautiful and durable new doors and high performance windows for curb appeal, energy savings, and security.
Of increasing popularity, high-performance windows can significantly save energy by reducing heat transfer, leading to lower heating/cooling costs, better indoor comfort (i.e. fewer drafts or cold spots), and decreased HVAC strain. Compared to older, standard windows, high performance windows often achieve 10-40% savings on energy bills. This is thanks to features like low-E coatings, multi-pane glass, gas fills, and insulated frames. They work by creating better barriers against outdoor temperatures, keeping heat in during winter (and out in summer), and by blocking UV rays. Lower energy use reduces your home’s carbon footprint and can qualify for energy-efficiency rebates or tax credits.
When looking to upgrade your entryway, not only are you boosting your home’s first impression, but you’re boosting your home’s resale value by appealing to eco-conscious buyers seeking lower bills, modern features, and enhanced curb appeal. For our clients who are preparing their home for a sale, by focusing on curb appeal and energy efficiency, they not only garner more prospective buyers, but often recoup a substantial portion of the costs at sale.
