In the month of February, 2026, we’ve certainly experienced a full range of winter weather. We’ve had more than our fair share of rain and intense storms, but also a phenomenal amount of clear, sunny days, and welcome warmth in winter that is unique to our fair state.
Perhaps it’s simply our good fortune, given we have plenty of natural beauty and an abundance of sunshine here in Northern California and the Greater Bay Area where we serve a healthy mix of homeowners, business and commercial property owners, and our agriculture family of farmers. But I suspect it’s a combination of our great year-round weather and stunning California views that account for the home improvement projects that seem to be top of mind in this second month of 2026.
In this month’s newsletter, I’ll discuss and describe a few of those trending projects here. We’ll continue to examine a few more of the very latest trends and key property owner topics, as well as share with you bits of building inspiration in the coming months, and beyond.
As we meet with both previous and prospective clients to discuss their home improvement needs and objectives, 3 key home improvement projects continue to come up:
Being motivated by these most recent discussions, I’d like to share a bit about each of these particular areas of highest home improvement interest.
What remains most popular amongst our former and prospective client’s for this month is the desire for a warm, welcoming, and very functional kitchen remodel featuring natural, sustainable materials like walnut or oak cabinetry, quartz countertops, and textured, earthy backsplashes. I’ll touch here upon just a few of the highlights for each of the 3 bulleted below.
Among the most requested kitchen remodel trends are:
Although still popular with some, our newest clients are beginning to move away from the all-white kitchens to warmer tones like wood and textured stone, and they have begun using deep colors like navy, forest green, or matte black.
For our clients who live in more rural areas, built-in breakfast nooks or banquettes remain popular, along with statement pendant lighting and textured, natural wood accents.
Among the most requested kitchen features are large multi-function islands, pull-out pantry systems, and hidden, organized storage to maximize space. Things like induction cooktops, touchless faucets, and smart appliances that enhance energy efficiency and that add convenience, are proving to be among the various features many of our clients seek.
And to accommodate increasing interest in indoor-outdoor integration, folding or sliding glass walls have become a rather popular feature.
So, now let’s explore the indoor-outdoor living space option, sometimes referred to as a “California Room.”
Per our discussions with homeowners, along with feedback from our trusted local architects and interior design partners, the outdoor kitchen (and lounge) trend is really growing. This appears to be the case because of California’s focus on year-round access, luxury-appointments, and sustainable “outdoor rooms” that we expressly design to seamlessly blend with your modern indoor living spaces.
It’s certainly unsurprising to know that this is being driven, in part, by the need for comfort during cooler Bay Area and NorCal evenings, along with a desire for the low-maintenance, drought-tolerant landscapes that are more common here. This trend clearly reflects a shift toward higher-end, functional, and tech-integrated, multi-use backyards. The good news is that today’s homebuyers are motivated to look for – and to pay higher prices for – homes that offer expanded living space that enables entertaining and socializing, both indoors and out.
Whereas backyards once housed a simple grilling station, patio furniture, and maybe a pool or spa, today’s homeowner is making the most of their property investment by utilizing all the available space and making it functional for year-round entertaining and culinary experiences that delight the senses and invite more socializing opportunities. We’re seeing requests for outdoor kitchens, or “California Rooms,” that amount to a fully integrated, professional-grade extension of the home designed for both creative culinary adventures and seamless social interaction.
By example, the focus today is on multi-functional zoning and professional capabilities that entail a comprehensive appliance suite that might feature a wood-fired pizza oven, infrared searing station, power rotisserie, or teppanyaki-style griddle.
For our clients contemplating such a project, we advise you think in terms of 4 primary function zones as follows:
To make this all work well and function smoothly (with limited steps needed), picture integrated plumbing for a full-size sink, a spacious countertop (L-shaped or linear), built-in refrigeration centers, and dedicated weatherproof pantries that eliminate the need to scurry back and forth between your indoor and outdoor kitchen space.
An all-season engineering approach ensures temperature and lighting is well-considered, as are select materials that withstand the full range of temperatures common throughout California’s changing seasons.
And for the third most requested project, think Adaptive Living!
I’m often asked to advise on how best to maximize dollars spent on home improvement projects that emphasize increased home value and future “sell-ability.”
Among the most requested project options for many Californian homeowners are Accessory Dwelling Units – an ADU or Junior ADU – because they can drive rental income, provide multi-generational living options, or serve as a home office or guest accommodations. In 2026, homeowners now have more options. However, with these new options come the need to navigate updated laws (SB 543, AB 1061, and AB 1154) that maximize lot density, allowing up to 3 units (detached ADU, converted unit, and JADU), and that provide for other situations (such as dealing with historic districts and streamlining the development of Junior ADUs). As an actively licensed, full-service, and BBB A+ rated general contractor, I keep myself apprised and informed regarding the ever-evolving ADU and building code changes so my clients don’t bear the burden or added stress of navigating these dynamic elements of accessory unit construction.
When it comes to “Flex-Rooms,” I’m talking about taking unused or under-utilized living space and converting it into dual-purpose rooms, such as a fully-functional home office expressly designed to also double as a home gym or to be used as a guest suite for visiting family or business associates.
